Abstract:  In this interview, Melanie Smith, a pharmacist and cosmetics chemist who oversees product development for Mary Kay Cosmetics, Inc., answers questions about types of cosmetics and active ingredients appropriate for compounding, inactive ingredients used in cosmetics, the use of cosmetics as vehicles for active ingredients and a general approach for developing a cosmetic formulation, among other topics. Example formulations are provided for Hair Styling Gel Formula, Skin Moisturizing Formula and Cream Formulation (Oil-in-Water Emulsion).
