Abstract: There are many advantages to using oral inhalation products. In this article, the author defines various dosage forms used in inhalation therapy, composition (physiochemical considerations, particle size, solubility, vehicle tonicity, pH, sterility, preservative, viscosity, buffer, surfactants and moisture content), preparation methods and techniques, specific quality control, storage and labeling and stability. Examples are provided for the following preservative-free formulations: Albuterol Sulfate 0.5% Inhalation Solution, Beclomethasone Dipropionate 0.042% Nasal Solution, Flunisolide 0.025% Inhalation Solution, Ipratropium Bromide 0.02% Solution, Terbutaline 0.1% Inhalant Solution, Albuterol-Cromolyn-Betamethasone for Inhalation, and Albuterol-Ipratropium for Inhalation.
