Abstract

The author discusses types of suspensions, applications and uses, characteristics of a good suspension, preparation methods and techniques, physicochemical uniqueness of common ingredients, commercial vehicles, specific quality control, storage and labeling and stability. Tables provide information regarding suspending agents and vehicles for extemporaneous preparations of suspensions and concentration of viscosity-increasing agents required for a viscosity of 800 cps. Official formulas are provided for Suspension Structure Vehicle USP and Sugar-Free Suspending Structure Vehicle USP. Other examples of suspensions provided include Spironolactone Oral Suspension, Progesterone Oral Suspension, Xanthan Gum Oral Suspension Vehicle, and Wound Care Mixture.
