Abstract: In this interview, Loyd V. Allen, Jr., PhD, RPh, discusses rapid-dissolve technology and his role in its development. He explains that he first became intrigued with this technology when RP Scherer developed its Zydis dosage form and that the unavailability of pediatric dosage forms from pharmaceutical companies was one reason for his interest. He holds nine patents issued from 1996 to 2001. He compares the cost of producing a rapid-dissolve tablet with that of producing a capsule, tablet or liquid; discusses disintegrants, diluents and coloring agents and lubricants used in rapid-dissolve preparations, explains what drugs the technology is especially useful for and provides tips for pharmacists who would like to prepare compounds using this technology.
