Abstract: The author discusses the history and evolution of hospice, the need for compounding pharmacists and costs and benefits. She also provides three brief case reports demonstrating the use of compounded preparations for pain management (ketoprofen 10% with doxepin 2% in a Pluronic lecithin organogel cream; ketoprofen 10% with nortriptyline 2% in a Pluronic lecithin organogel gel used in conjunction with Depakote; and clonidine 0.2%, amitriptyline 5% and guaifenesin 3% in a Pluronic lecithin organogel cream).
