Abstract: The author discusses infusion pumps that allow the administration of small volumes of drug into the intrathecal space to provide additional treatment options for patients with chronic pain or spasticity. He goes on to discuss drugs administered intrathecally for pain management, complications (none have been reported) and reimbursement issues. He concludes that as these infusion devices become increasingly popular, pharmacists may be called upon to prepare solutions to be used with them. Familiarity with the preparation technique, as well as future research into stability and compatibility of these drug combinations, will hopefully provide further treatment options for patients with hard-to-treat pain syndromes.
