Abstract

This profile features Sue Horton, RPh, and Central Iowa Compounding Pharmacy in Des Moines, IA. Horton describes the two pivotal events that launched her business into bioidentical hormone replacement therapy: when she called in to a radio talk show on the subject and began team-teaching an adult education course with a nurse on the subject. Adult education has been such an effective marketing tool that the pharmacy now compounds approximately 50 prescriptions for hormone replacement therapy each day. Patient response has been so effective in bringing around physicians that she no longer has to make cold calls but instead invites physicians of new patients to come by the pharmacy for a minitour of the compounding lab. About 80% to 85% of the pharmacy’s business is now primarily compounding for hormone replacement therapy.
