Abstract:  According to the author, the purpose of this article is to provide a clear, concise definition of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and to review the scientific literature supporting its use to treat symptoms caused by natural or surgically induced menopause. It focuses on the three estrogens endogenous to humans, as well as on progesterone and testosterone. Specifically, the discussion covers bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, Tri-est and Bi-est, the case for adding estriol to a regimen, effects of estriol on heart and bones and estriol for management of postmenopausal symptoms. Tables provide a list of advantages of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and an estrogen dosage conversion chart. This is the first of a three-part series on this topic.
