Abstract:  The author conducted an investigation to determine the effect of sodium bicarbonate on the pH value of nafcillin sodium powder for injection (the sodium bicarbonate was being added by hospital clinicians to prevent phlebitis at the site of injection). Results showed that the initial pH value of all injections with sodium bicarbonate injections was 7.7 (+/- 0.05); the pH of those without sodium bicarbonate injection was 7.0. The pH values of the injections with sodium bicarbonate remained constant throughout the study period. The author says that he has been trying to determine why phlebitis was prevented when the pH of the injections increased to 7.7 from 7.0 and that he wonders if the balance between the two citrate ions at pH 7 was causing phlebitis; he invites readers to provide input concerning this issue.
