Abstract:  Gels have a variety of applications in the administration of medications. In this article, the author covers definitions, classification of gels, gel-forming agents, preparation, common ingredients (alginic acid, bentonite, carbomer resins, carboxymethylcellulose, carboxymethylcellulose sodium/sodium carboxymethylcellulose, colloidal silicon dioxide, gelatin, magnesium aluminum silicate, methylcellulose, Plastibase/Jelene, poloxamer, polyvinyl alcohol, povidone, propylene glycol alginate, sodium alginate, tragacanth gum and Liqua-Gel), quality control, storage and stability. Tables provide a listing of general classifications and descriptions of gels and typical properties of selected carbopol pharmaceutical resins. The following example formulations are also provided: Poloxamer Gel Base, Lubricating Jelly Formula, Clear Carbomer Gel, Pluronic Lecithin Organogel (PLO Gel), Methylcellulose Gels and Piroxicam 0.5% in an Alcoholic Gel.
