Abstract:  Compounder Gary Newton, RPh, FACA, is a pharmaceutical chemist and owner of the Prescription Center, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The first computer system that he acquired for use in his pharmacy proved reliable and adequate for 25 years. The advent of the 21st century made the purchase of a new computer system essential, but Newton found that the many improvements provided by updated technology can be offset by new and unplanned challenges. Newton shares his experience in upgrading the computer system essential to his compounding practice and offers suggestions for pharmacists who face a similar revision.
