Abstract: Burns are among the most painful and chronically debilitating of all injuries. Burned tissue is extremely vulnerable to pathogenic invasion and subsequent infection, a complication that can greatly increase morbidity, mortality, and disfigurement and can negatively impact the patient’s overall quality of life long term. Because infected burns often present complicated treatment-related challenges, this second article in a 2-part series addresses care for those wounds in particular. Topics examined include factors in burn-infection development and the compounder’s role in treating infected burns and the patients who have incurred them. Formulations proven effective in healing those challenging injuries are also provided.
