Abstract

In this article, the authors list medications available in the United States that require specific containers and/or administration sets. One table includes medications that sorb to polyvinyl chloride containers and tubing; another lists medications that leach the plasticizer diethylhexyl phthalate from diethylhexyl phthalate-plasticized polyvinyl chloride bags and/or tubing to an extent that exceeds the target range of 20 micrograms/kilogram/day. The authors conclude that pharmacists practicing in a demanding intravenous admixture setting should review medication preparation guidelines for suitable diluents, volumes required for reconstitution, compatible solutions, final admixture volumes and rates of infusion. As new parenteral drug entities are introduced into the marketplace, pharmacists must select the most suitable infusion containers to provide optimal and safe parenteral therapy.
