Abstract

This discussion involving three compounding pharmacists experienced in compounding bioidentical hormone replacement therapy began in response to the question: as compounding pharmacists who work with physicians and patients on a daily basis, are you receiving any questions regarding prohormones? The discussion also touches on the following topics: metabolic pathways of bioidentical hormones, experiences with prohormones (pregnenolone, androstenedione, dihydroepiandrostenedione), dosing with pregnenolone, nutritional impacts on prohormones, effect of thyroid on menopause in men and women, dihydroepiandrostenedione, the effects of insulin hormones and increases and decreases in sex hormone-binding globulin, the effect of the gut on hormones, and estriol and homocysteine.
