Abstract

Using topical formulations for treatment of wounds has the advantage that adverse effects associated with systemic medications or potential drug-drug interactions can largely be avoided. This article covers anal fissures, burns, diabetic ulcers and hypertrophic scars and discusses mechanisms of wound healing (inflammation, proliferation and remodeling), topical agents used in wound healing (adenosine A-2A receptor agonists, aloe vera, becaplermin, calcium channel blockers, nifedipine, pentoxifylline, glyceryl trinitrate, celecoxib, estrogen and glyceryl trinitrate).
