Abstract:  Ointments and pastes are among the dosage forms used primarily to deliver a drug topically to the skin for various disorders. In this article, the author covers oleaginous ointments and pastes and water-soluble ointments. The discussion covers definitions and characteristics, preparation (direct incorporation using oleaginous ointments and pastes, manual methods, mechanical methods, fusion, ointment mill, incorporation of ingredients into a water-soluble ointment), stability, packaging, storage/stability and general considerations (powders, levigating agents, volatile ingredients, bases, pastes, packaging, products that are too stiff, ointments, enhancement of workability of drugs). Three official ointment formulas commonly used as bases are provided.
