Abstract:  Oral liquid vehicles are used to dilute drugs to a suitable volume for proper dosing, to flavor a preparation for easy administration and to provide a stable and elegant preparation. In this discussion, the author covers the official United States Pharmacopeia/National Formulary vehicles (Aromatic Elixir USP, Compound Benzaldehyde Elixir NF, Peppermint Water NF, Sorbitol Solution USP, Suspension Structured Vehicle USP, Sugar-free Suspension Structured Vehicle USP, Syrup NF, and Xanthan Gum Solution NF. He also covers the following nonofficial vehicles: acacia syrup; aromatic eriodictyon syrup; cherry syrup; citric acid syrup; cocoa syrup; glycyrrhiza elixir; glycyrrhiza syrup; hydriodic acid syrup; isoalcoholic elixir, low; isoalcoholic elixir, high; orange flower water; orange syrup; raspberry syrup; sarsaparilla compound syrup; tolu syrup and wild cherry syrup. In addition, the following commercial branded vehicles are described: Coca-Cola Syrup, Ora-Sweet SyrupVehicle, Oral-Sweet SF Sugar-Free Syrup Vehicle and Syrpalta. A table provides information regarding the physicochemical properties of some oral liquid vehicles.
