Abstract:  Viscosity plays an important role in a number of different dosage forms. In this article, the author focuses on definitions, preparation, preservation and examples from the United States Pharmacopeia XIII/National Formulary 18. The following examples are covered: acacia; Agar NF; Alginic Acid NF; attapulgite, activated; bentonite; Carbomers 910, 934, 934P, 940, 941 and 1342 NF; Carboxymethylcellulose Calcium NF; Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium USP; carrageenan; Cellulose, Microcrystalline NF; Microcrystalline Cellulose and Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium NF; Dextrin NF; Gelatin NF; Guar Gum NF; Hydroxyethyl Cellulose NF; Hydroxypropyl Cellulose NF; Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose USP; Magnesium Aluminum Silicate NF; Methylcellulose USP; Pectin USP; Poloxamer NF; Polyethylene Oxide NF; Polyvinyl Alcohol USP; Povidone USP; Propylene Glycol Alginate NF; Silicon Dioxide NF; Sodium Alginate NF; Tragacanth NF and Xanthan Gum NF.
