Abstract:  Particulates can be entrapped in the lungs, liver and spleen, and particles greater than 7 microns in diameter are threatening. In this brief discussion, the author covers sources of particulates and their detection. He ends by cautioning that pharmacists who do not have the necessary training, facilities and equipment should not be involved in sterile-products compounding; and that they should be familiar with the United States Pharmacopeia/National Formulary guidelines on the preparation of sterile products, in addition to other organizations’ guidelines.
