Abstract:  Emulsions are dosage forms that enable pharmacists to prepare relatively stable and homogeneous mixtures of two immiscible liquids. In this article, the author discusses definitions of emulsions and their applications and uses, composition and preparation; physicochemical uniqueness of compounding ingredients; emulsifying agents and the hydrophile-lipophile balance system. Tables provide information regarding emulsions and stabilizers of emulsions, ratios of components for preparation of primary emulsions; hydrophile-lipophile balance system values of emulsifiers; required hydrophile-lipophile balance system values for common lipid materials used to prepare oil-in-water emulsions and blending of surfactants.
